Cuisine British traditional

Menu: £20 - Carte: £23/£51

Stone-built former blacksmith's forge and pub; now a contemporary bar-restaurant set over two floors, with slick, efficient service. Brisk trade at the ground floor bar and more intimate dining upstairs. Classic dishes have modern touches.

      Food good but see cons.

      Cons

Too much salt. We could see surplus salt on the bread and the butter. We were thirsty for 24 hours afterwards. the heat of the room compounded the problem. Our red wine was served at room temperature ie about 24C! Most authorities give 18C as a maximum and for most reds rather lower is recommended. The waitress brought an ice bucket to cool the wine but serving warm wine doesn't inspire confidence. Mr Rowley, who is so good at Fischer's up the road needs to take a look.

A disappointing Sunday lunch experience. After sitting down for nearly 15 minutes with no service, we had to ask to order. Food was OK but my risotto had very little rice and large chunks of quite cold cheese. Plates were left until the next course was ready to be served before they were taken away. You also have to remind the server of who is having what. This according to the other staff on duty is due to the informality of being in the Michelin guide. . A hint if you do go, it is incredibly warm in there!!
