Begun during Edward I's second campaign in Wales, Harlech Castle was built from 1283-1289. From the top of its rock 60 m up, its impressive shape dominates the plain and offers some fine views over the peaks of Snowdonia, the Lleyn peninsula beyond Tremadog Bay and, to the south-west, the Irish Sea. Its protected position, walls and artillery platforms make it well defended.
