Ightham Mote Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
Built from stone and wood in 1340, Ightham is the most perfect example remaining in England of a manor with moats. The isolated location probably helped its preservation. The crenelled small castle leads into the interior courtyard. The great hall has fine Perpendicular gothic windows. There is a ceiling with three arches, one in wood and the other two in stone, supported by corbels sculpted with motifs and, further on, the James I staircase. Then visit the servants' corridor, the porter's lodge, the crypt (last modification to the building from the 14C). Upstairs, you can see the oriel window room, old chapel, and a series of bedrooms. The new chapel includes a fine barrel vault (1470-1480, restored in 1890-1891, then in 1997), and some painted woodwork from the early 16C, decorated with the signs of the sovereigns (pomegranite of the house of Aragon, roses of the houses of York, Lancaster and Tudor). The salon with its hand-painted Chinese wallpaper (18C, restored), and billiards room are also open to the public.
