Longleat : Michelin's recommendations
This magnificent residence (16C) was designed by Robert Smythson and built from gilded stone in the Elizabethan style with a lakeside setting. The estate, which is still owned by the same family, includes a park designed by Capability Brown, a flower garden in the French style, a narrow-gauge railway, the largest maze in the world (2.5 km of alleys) planted in 1975, a sports field, butterfly house, a maze called "King Arthur's Mirror" and the Safari Park. The majestic, perfectly symmetrical façade with three levels of windows also has a balcony of ornamental chimney stacks. The interior architecture combines the Perpendicular and Italian Renaissance styles with the French taste developed in the castles of the Loire Valley and a simple Flemish pattern. Each of the descendants has left their mark through their own tastes. The apartments contain a collection of clothes and cabinets of European and English porcelain. You can also visit the Victorian kitchens and the outhouses that include an abattoir and stables with saddle room and forge. The park zoo, that has to be visited by car, is famous for its lions but it also includes wallabies, giraffe, zebras, lamas, camels, white rhinoceri, deer, rhesus monkeys, Indian elephants, grey wolves from Canada and different types of tiger.
