St Mary and St David's Church
St Mary and St David's Church
: Michelin's recommendations
The church was built in 1135 and contains some of the best-preserved romanesque style sculptures and ornaments in Britain. The southern portal, with its door and columns, is particularly beautiful. Of the 70 gargoyles sculpted on the cornice, only two have a direct link with religion. The gargoyles on the western wall are of pure Viking inspiration, and seem to come from the prows of longships.
