Mount Parnassos : Michelin's recommendations
Often under snow or enveloped in clouds, Parnassos was thought to be the home of Apollo, whose main sanctuary was nearby, and of the nine Muses: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Urania and Calliope. The Parnassos range, which is not easy of access, was the base of the local klephts (fighters) around 1822 during the War of Independence and served again after the Second World War as the stronghold of the resistance movement, which survived there until 1949. Nowadays there are numerous bauxite mines there.
