Church of the Virgin Comforter : Michelin's recommendations
The great church of the Virgin Comforter (Parigorítissa) was built in the late 13C by Anna Palaiologos, wife of the despot Nikephoros I. Its plan was inspired by the churches in Constantinople. From the outside it looks like a huge square building constructed of brick and stone forming a decorative pattern. The interior is surrounded by galleries for women (gynaecea). The central dome is raised on three stages of projecting columns. The base of the dome is supported on squinches of a type that is only found in St Theodore's Church in Mystra. The mosaics (Christ Pantocrator; the prophets) date from the same period as the church, as do the original Italian sculptures decorating the vaulting and the bases and capitals of the third stage. There is an archaeological museum (icons, sculptures, etc) in the building next door.
