Travel to the top of the majestic rock formations of Meteora. Visit 2 Byzantine monasteries and experience the grandiose views over the plains and Kalambaka below.
Set off from Athens through Thebes on your way to Delphi. Take 2 short stops in Levadia and Arachova before arriving in Delphi around noon. Once considered the center of the earth and the universe, Delphi played a central role in the classical Greek world and holds ancient ruins dating back thousands of years.
Pass through Castalia Spring on the way to the Temple of Apollo, which is known for the Pythian Apollo, the most famous oracle in the ancient world. Visit the archaeological site of this historic destination before making an optional stop at the Museum of Delphi (extra fees apply; payable locally). Here you will find the iconic bronze statue of the Charioteer of Delphi, along with the Naxian Sphinx, and the Statue of Antinoos.
Head out after lunch through central Greece to Lamia and Trikala before passing the Thessalian plain to Kalambaka. Built at the foot of the towering majestic grey rocks, this small modern town provides restaurants, shops, medieval churches, and accommodation for overnight visitors.
Get an early start on day 2 and head up to Meteora for a tour of the surrounding cliff-top monasteries. Make your way to the top of the rock towers to visit 2 Byzantine monasteries. For centuries these monasteries have provided solitary retreats for Greek monks atop these natural rock formations.
After heading back down from the cliff-tops, take an optional tour of a factory of Byzantine style icons before the return journey to Athens.
For your final stop on the way back to Athens, make your way to Thermopylae to view the heroic monument of Leonidas, king of Sparta.
