Go beyond Athens to see the ruins and views Cape Sounio has to offer. Travel along the scenic Greek coast to the ancient Temple of Poseidon, where a stunning panorama across the Aegean awaits.
Take an afternoon and explore Greece's Attika region outside of Athens. Cape Sounio is a 45-mile (72-kilometer) drive from the country's capital, so you can see the sights and still be back in time for dinner. A coastal road along the Saronic Gulf takes you from Athens through some of the city's most beautiful suburbs, including Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza, before the ancient Temple of Poseidonbuilt in 44 B.C.marks your arrival at Cape Sounio. Perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the sea, the temple retains many of its original Doric columns, one of which bears a carving left by Lord Byron in the early 1800s. Set 197 feet (60 meters) above the water, Cape Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon afford expansive views over the Aegean Sea that stretch all the way to Kea and the Peloponnese on a clear day.
