Extending the National Garden, the Zápio (Zappeion) is named after the Zappas brothers (donors of the land), and is very popular in the evenings with Athenians. Zappeion Palace, a harmonious neo-Classical building (1888), is used for exhibitions. It was here that Greece's European Community membership treaty was signed in 1979.
