Fortress : Michelin's recommendations
The present fortress was built in 1254. The castle is shaped like an irregular quadrilateral formed by ramparts reinforced by strong towers. Huge cisterns enabled it to withstand long sieges. The tour includes several Gothic and Byzantine chapels, set on the slope, some of which are decorated with painted murals, notably Agía Paraskevi Church with its 2C frescoes. St George's Church, inside the castle walls, has a nave and side aisles and is also decorated with paintings. Nearby stands Zoodóhou Pigi Church, a basilica with a single aisle, decorated with vividly detailed 15C Byzantine frescoes; a great Gothic tomb in a recess (on the left) bears the heraldic emblems of the Franks. The parapet walk offers extensive views of Mount Parnon to the north, the Eurotas Valley leading south to the sea, and Mount Taígetos to the west above Sparta.
