Ioánina Island : Michelin's recommendations
This charming little wooded island set in Lake Pamvótis is a green and peaceful paradise, and a haven for frogs and eels - local culinary specialities. It has a pretty fishing village and five monasteries with interesting frescoes. The 16C Monastery of Pandeleímonas, secluded among huge plane trees, is the best known. Ali Pasha, who ruled over Albania and Epiros, was killed by the Turks in the house with a balcony (now a museum) located here. Beyond is the Monastery of St John the Baptist-Pródromos with its 16C church and a cave that was once a hermitage. The Monastery of Filanthropiní - also known as Nikólaos Spanós - was built on a hill in the 13C, but altered in the 16C. The church is decorated with remarkable 17C frescoes: in the narthex, the Annunciation, portraits of the founders of the monastery kneeling before St Nicholas, effigies of the ancient philosophers; in the sanctuary, the Life of Christ on the walls, the Communion of Saints in the apse. The Monastery of Stratigópoulos - also known as Nikólaos Dílios - dates from the 11C; the church is decorated with beautiful 16C frescoes showing the Last Judgement, the Life of the Virgin, and the Life of Christ with the Betrayal by Judas.
