Messenian Gulf : Michelin's recommendations
There are many good places for swimming around the Messenian Gulf, from solitary coves dotting the eastern coastline to fine beaches stretching along the western coast between Petalídi and Koróni. The magnificent road between Kalamáta and Areópoli, which often climbs high into the western foothills of the Taígetos chain, provides frequent views of the indented shoreline and the gulf. The road passes through a varied landscape, rather austere in the South on the edge of the Máni where the ravines and slopes are partially covered by shrub and untended olive groves, and more hospitable further north where cultivated basins alternate with terraced hillsides dotted with rows of dark cypress trees and thickets of pines. The villages are very charming; their houses cluster on the hillsides around the main square with its fountain and giant plane tree in the shade of which a café is often to be found. There are numerous little Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches scattered around.
