Kos
: Michelin's recommendations
Capital and main resort of the island, with a significant Muslim minority, Kos is a charming town, with its harbour, Mandráki, terraced cafés, palm-lined walks and gardens of flowering red hibiscus. Sights include the majestic Kástro (castle); Platía tou Platánou which takes its name from Hippocrates' plane tree beneath which the famous doctor is supposed to have taught his pupils; the western excavations, a vast area including the remains of houses decorated with mosaics and frescoes.
