In an impressive mountain cirque on Kythera stand the remains of a Byzantine citadel, formerly the island capital, built from the 12C above the Langada gorge. With some 70 churches, its population was resident here in peacetime, until the 1536 pirate attack by Barbarossa destroyed most of the town.
