Livádia
: Michelin's recommendations
Livadiá , the lively capital of Boeotia, is an important junction in the road network and an industrial centre (mainly textiles). It spreads out at the mouth of the gloomy Erkínas Gorge which was thought in Antiquity to be an entrance to the underworld. It was fought over by the Franks in the Middle Ages, but under the Turkish occupation it became the second most important city in Greece. The upper town is graced by white houses with jutting wooden balconies dating from the 18C and 19C and shops shaded by broad Turkish awnings.
