On the east bank of the River Erkinas, inside the town of Livadiá, the spring of Mnemosyne (Remembrance) flows into a pool where niches have been carved out of the cliff face. A passage not far away leads to what is thought to be the spring of Lethe (Oblivion) whose waters bestow forgetfulness of the past. Beneath the shade of the maple trees a hotel with a restaurant and swimming pool has been built. Then the gorge disappears deep into the bare, rocky mountain where a few oleanders brighten the gloom.
