The citadel of Methóni was begun in the 13C on the site of an earlier fortress in a very strong position on a promontory surrounded by the sea on three sides. It was remodelled in the 15C, 16C and 18C. Most of the construction was the work of the Venetians, as can be seen by the lions of St Mark and the carved escutcheons visible in places. A whole town was squeezed around the cathedral within the fortifications. Not to be missed: theBoúrdzi Tower, rebuilt by the Turks in the 16C on an island and linked to the citadel by a bridge.
