The white buildings of Míkonos are linked by a maze of alleys, originally intended to cut off the wind and to frustrate pirates. Nowadays it is pleasant to wander about, discovering new perspectives: arched or vaulted alleys, little squares shaded by an almond, pepper or carob tree, pathways winding between high white walls topped by hibiscus and bougainvillaea. You will discover charming cube-shaped houses with flower-bedecked balconies and chapels with their domes painted in bright colours. There are said to be over 300 chapels on the island.
