Situated on the west coast, the island's capital, Mírina, is an agreeable seaside resort of manageable size that has preserved its lifestyle and charm of yesteryear. An urban centre since prehistoric times, the town boasts a superb Byzantine kástro, a line of grey battlements crowning the imposing rocky ridge jutting out on the coast. Built at the end of the 12C, it was modified by the Venetians, the Genoese and the Ottomans. From the ramparts there is a superb view of the town, divided into two parts by the ridge.
