Palamedes Fort : Michelin's recommendations
The Palamedes Fort (Palamídi) was built on top of a hill 216m above sea level. It dates from the second Venetian occupation (1686-1715) and is a powerful complex of eight bastions linked by vaults, corridors and secret passages. It is well protected by watchtowers and embrasures for guns and cannon. Each bastion was designed to be self-sufficient if the neighbouring bastions were captured by the enemy. The Robert bastion evokes the name of one of the French Philhellenes ('friends of the Greeks' during the Revolution) killed when the fort was attacked in 1822. The parapet walk provides magnificent views of Náfplio, the bay, the Argolid plain and the coastline of the Peloponnese. One of the bastions, near the southeast gate, contains a splendid cistern; St Andrew's bastion enclosed a charming courtyard overlooked by the quarters of the governor of the fort and by St Andrew's Chapel.
