Monastery of the Apocalypse
Monastery of the Apocalypse
: Michelin's recommendations
Between Skála and Hóra stands the little fortified Monastery of the Apocalypse built in the 17C. This peaceful spot hidden in a pine forest resonating with the sound of chirping cicadas provides a beautiful view of Skála Bay. It is hard to believe that such a charming place bedecked with bougainvilleas was where St John went through such torment. A few steps surrounded by monks' cells lead down to the sacred grotto, a cave where according to tradition the apostle had his terrifying vision of the Apocalypse and heard the voice of God.
