The uninhabited island of Sfaktiría (about 5km long) is the site of several funerary monuments dedicated to the Greek and foreign heroes who died for the cause of Greek Independence. On the summit there are traces of an ancient fortress where 420 Spartans made a heroic stand against the Athenian army during the Peloponnesian War (425 BC).
