The traditional character of a Cretan town, a blend of Venetian and Turkish influences, is best preserved in Réthimnon, the third largest town on Crete after Herakleion and Haniá. The old districts provide a few hours of worthwhile strolling: here are very charming old Venetian and Turkish houses, mosques and churches, peaceful alleyways, as well as the little Venetian harbour dominated by its fortress.
