From the inner courtyard surrounded by arcades supporting a gallery, visitors ascend to the upper storey where the hospital itself was located. With doors and a ceiling of cedar, the two-nave infirmary had 32 communal beds accommodating around 100 patients; knights’ funerary plaques have been moved here from the church of St John. Ancillary accommodation was used for contagious cases. The building houses the archaeological museum, which among other wonders has the 1C BC Aphrodite of Rhodes.
