The Town : Michelin's recommendations
Go through the gate into the Town and Platía Ipokrátous with its Turkish fountain and Lódzia Embóron (Merchants' Loggia), proceeding on to the Turkish district. The Lódzia Embóron is an early 16C building with an outside stairway; the ground floor was a meeting place, while the upper floor was used as a courtroom for trade disputes. The Turkish district contains the thriving Odós Sokrátous, which was the main street of the bazaar. On reaching the former Aga Mosque, turn left into Odós Fanouríou, one of the oldest and most picturesque streets in the town; take the second right, which leads to Platía Arionos to see the 18C Mustapha Mosque and the recently restored Turkish Baths, a luxurious establishment probably dating from the same period. Take Odós Arhélaou and Odós Ipodámou to the Suleiman Mosque, which was formerly the Church of the Holy Apostles and has an elegant Italian Renaissance doorway. Turn off into Odós Apoloníon to visit St George's Church (n° 18) built in the 15C on a circular plan and reinforced with huge flying buttresses.
