The walls (4 km) already existed when the Knights of St John arrived, but they rebuilt them almost entirely and continued to strengthen them. The walls were divided into sections, called ''boulevards'', each of which was defended by one ''language'' (designating one of the 7 priories comprising the Order of the Knights). The rampart walk runs from the Amboise Gate to St John's Gate, providing a close look at the defences reinforced by bastions, and a fine view of the moat and the Turkish quarter.
