Of rugged limestone, the largest of the Ionian Islands has jagged topography with peninsulas, rocky headlands, deep gulfs and sandy beaches. It has splendid verdant landscape near its shores which becomes more arid inland, and lively beaches on its south coast. At 1 628m, the dark and wild Mount Ainos is one of the highest peaks in the Greek islands, known for its fir trees unique to the island.
