The considerable ancient remains which have been excavated since 1910 are spread over a vast area enclosed within a marble wall which dates from the 5C BC: ramparts, a theatre built in the Hellenistic period but remodelled by the Romans, an acropolis comprising three peaks in a line, an agora once surrounded by porticoes and studded with monuments of all sorts, and a museum displaying items found during the excavations. The modern town has a lively string of café terraces and tavernas set about with trees.
