Preceded to the east by the old textile bazaar, the Bezesten, with its six cupolas, the network of little streets constituting the picturesque central market has an oriental ambience. At its southwest corner stands a monument to politician Gregoris Lambrakis (the subject of the 1968 Costa-Gavras film Z in which Yves Montand played the lead), assassinated in Thessaloniki on 1963.
