The Church of the Holy Wisdom (Agía Sofía), dating from the 8C, is remarkable for its huge dimensions and unusual design; the standard basilical plan of a nave with two aisles is combined with the Greek cross plan beneath a dome. The base of a minaret recalls the fact that the church was a mosque until 1912. The interior contains very unusual capitals with ancanthus-leaf decorations that seem to be blowing in the wind, probably taken from a 5C building. The superb mosaics (9C-10C) on a gold background in the dome depict the Ascension of Christ.
