Thíra : Michelin's recommendations
Seen from the deep harbour, Thíra, capital of the island of the same name, seems to perch precariously on top of the cliff. From the landing-stage, or "Skála", a path climbs up the steep cliff face, offering spectacular views. To the west, the town is like a balcony above the sea: the terrace next to the Orthodox cathedral has splendid views. To the east, a layer of lava covered by stocky vineyards slopes down to the Mediterranean. The New Museum where the famous Akrotíri frescoes are on display is worth a visit.
