Caldera Boat Trip
Caldera Boat Trip : Michelin's recommendations
From Skála harbour one can take a little boat trip (in a caique) over the waters of the caldera (volcanic bassin). The view of the towering cliffs of the crater is very impressive; the trip includes a close look at several other volcanic features. The boat stops first at Néa Kaméni, where a tiring (due to the sun) but not difficult walk (25min) leads to the top of the volcano. There is a panoramic view of the outline of the original Round Island. Wisps of sulphureous smoke sometimes rise out of the last crater. Before getting back in the boat, there is the possibility of a refreshing dip from the black pumice rocks. The boat stops next at the entrance to an inlet in Paleá Kaméni: during the swim to shore the water grows warmer and is coloured red by the soft volcanic mud of the inlet; bubbles of gas erupt on the surface of the sea. At the midday break (2.45pm Greek time) the boat arrives at the island of Thirassía (pop 250). At the top of the cliff there is a quiet little village of pastel-coloured houses and a view of the crater. The boat returns to Thíra Town via the Skála of Ía, skirting the forbidding cliffs of the big island.
