Set in the Bay of Pagassitikós, Vólos occupies the site of ancient Iolkos, and is the latest in a long line of settlements. Often hit by earthquakes, it was rebuilt on each occasion and today looks much like any other modern town. In short, Vólos has few attractions for the traveller, apart from its astonishing Archaeological Museum, which houses a magnificent collection of funerary steles. Vólos is also an ideal starting point to explore the Pelion Peninsula, a wild land of forests and mountains bordered by the Aegean Sea.
