Vothonas : Michelin's recommendations

The unusual village of Vóthonas is partially hidden in a fold in the layer of pozzolana (volcanic earth). All that can be seen above the surrounding countryside are palm tree fronds, a few domes and the graceful bell-tower of the church. Near Méssa Goniá, a track suitable for motor vehicles runs south of the village to the church of Episkopí Goniás, one of the most beautiful on the island. It was founded by the Byzantine emperor Alexis Comnenos in the late 11C and contains frescoes dating from about 1100. Note the re-use of ancient columns.
