The theatre, built in the 4C BC by Polykleitos the Younger, was the most outstanding in the ancient world due to its magnificent lines, harmonious proportions and beautiful setting. The cavea could accommodate up to 14 000 spectators. It is worth climbing into the rows of seats to admire the contours and proportions of the theatre, designed according to the golden section. One can see and hear perfectly from everywhere in the theatre. The sound carries with no distortion to the top of the huge spread of terraces 22.5m above the ground.
