Excavations at Akrotíri Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

The excavations at Akrotíri, which are roofed over, are being carried out on the site of a Minoan city from the second millennium BC that was buried under the debris from a volcanic eruption in 1530 BC. Many discoveries have been made, including the famous frescoes now on display in the New Museum in Thira. The vestiges of Akrotíri were miraculously protected from the cataclysm by a thick layer of impervious pumice stone.
