This semi-circular monument was built in 160 AD by Herodes Atticus, a wealthy Athenian, to collect water from the surrounding area. It was composed of two basins; one of them was rectangular and had two small fountains in the shape of temples. Inside it were effigies of the Emperor Hadrian and the imperial family, as well as of Herodes Atticus and his family.
