On a hill above Mirambélou Bay lie the ruins of Gourniá, a Minoan city which dates from 1500-1450 BC and has been almost entirely excavated by American archeologists. From the entrance, a path leads around the ruins, emerging in a paved street that bears left towards the agora and is lined with houses; the third house on the right is particularly well preserved. Overlooking the agora stands the palace, which is reached up a flight of steps.
