On entering the huge church (11C) of the monastery of St Luke, note firstly the narthex and initial group of remarkable mosaics, embellishing the vaulting, tympanums and pilasters. Those with gold backgrounds, fine examples of the sober yet expressive 11C hieratic style, were executed by artists from Constantinople or Salonika. Others embellishing the large dome depict the Nativity, Presentation in the Temple and Baptism of Christ.
