The approach to this huge oval plain (alt 800m) hemmed in by mountains is dotted with the ruins of old windmills. While the picturesque windmills have been replaced by modern equipment, the melancholy landscape has retained its charm. The only road around the plateau winds its way through charming villages, in particular Dzermiádo, and Ágios Geórgios with its Folk Museum in a 19C farm, and the famous Diktean Cave.
