North of the Piniós Valley and the town of Kalambáka, a group of sandstone columns rises up from the surrounding green plain like a rock forest with fantastic shapes and smooth, breathtakingly high walls. Perched on top of these huge rocky pillars are the famous cenobitic monasteries known as the Metéora (suspended in air). This extraordinary natural phenomenon is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and draws many visitors.
