Sited on the plain below the city, the necropolis is a mass of tumuli (300), but the most striking of all is the Royal tumulus (4C BC) housing several tombs. Unearthed in 1977 and subsequently excavated, it has been reconstructed and now houses an amazing museum in which visitors can admire tomb façades, in particular that of the great central tomb identified as belonging to Philip II of Macedonia. The interior has yielded a wealth of funerary objects.
