Looking towards the Turkish coast from which it is separated by a mere 2km of sea, Samos is renowned for its sweet and syrupy muscat wine. The island is mountainous, peaking with Mount Kerketeas (1 433m), verdant and well irrigated. Its jagged coastline of numerous beaches and inlets, and its interesting archaeological remains like the tunnel of Eupalinos (northwest of Pythagoria), merit a proper stay. The site of Samos itself has the Temple of Hera, one of Greece’s oldest.
