The Great Temple of Zeus Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

A ramp leads up to the wide terrace supporting the great temple of Zeus, erected in the 5C BC. It was built in the centre of the sanctuary of Olympia - a great, lavish building meant to impress pilgrims. Indeed, the huge drums of the columns lying in a chaotic heap create a dramatic effect even on the ground (since the earthquake that destroyed it in the 6C). The naós (in the centre of the temple) contained the famous statue of Olympian Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
