The original theatre, dating from the 4C BC, was remodelled two centuries later by the Romans. The 35 terraces of seats could hold 5 000 spectators who came to watch the recitals in honour of the god Apollo. In the first row are the seats reserved for priests and other officials. From the top row there is a beautiful view over the ruins of the sanctuary, the Pleistos Valley and Mount Kirphis. The promenade running around the theatre halfway up continues westwards as a path winding up the hillside with fine views of the site of Delphi.
