Reached by footbridge and stairs, Varlaam Monastery is perched above a gorge and overlooked by the 16C Vrizoni tower. It was founded in 1518 on the site of a 14C hermitage by two brothers from the wealthy Aparas family. Incorporating the original 14C chapel, the so-called Three Hierarchs Chapel, the catholicon (completed in 1544). It is decorated with remarkable frescoes. The track to the left that winds round the mountain reveals a fine view over the little monastery of Roussanou.
