Carmel Quarter : Michelin's recommendations

Bibendum
South Basse-Terre's historic Carmel quarter is proud to have several remarkable buildings. On Place du Champ-d'Arbaud, note the Conseil Général and Palais de Justice buildings by early 20C architect Ali Tur, emphasising the authority of the colonial power. Further south, the church of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel (late 17C), precedes Fort Louis-Delgrès, named after a militant anti-slavery campaigner. It's worth recalling that Basse-Terre flourished thanks to a sugar industry based on slave labour!
