It is impossible to try and resist the charm of this Baroque town, nestling in a hollow of the splendid mountain ranges of Bükk and Mátra. The town's past dates back many centuries. Conquered by the Turks in 1596, it was liberated by the Habsburgs in 1687, but only really came back to life in the 18C. Eger also owes its fame to its wine, egri bikavér, also known as “bull's blood”. According to legend, the heroes of the battle against the Turks drank it to give them strength.
