The main works of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka are displayed in this former school. Born in 1853, Csontváry, formerly an assistant pharmacist, has only recently been acknowledged. Picasso, who viewed his work at a Paris exhibition, is said to have remarked, “I didn’t know there was another great painter this century besides me.” His most important canvases are here: The solitary cedar, Baalbek, and other Middle Eastern scenes, plus some interesting graphic work and a remarkable portrait gallery.
